Above 14th street, Manhattan is an organized grid of avenues running "north-south", and streets running "east-west", through a system designed in 1811.
Streets run consecutively, and their numbers grow as one travels north.
Avenues are slightly less predictable - some are numbered while others have names. The avenue numbers increase as one travels west.
Broadway, which follows an old Algonquin trail, defies the rectangular pattern and cuts diagonally across Manhattan, veering east of Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street.
Central Park and Fifth Avenue (south of 59th Street and north of 110th Street) divide the city into the East Side and West Side.
